One of the last Hathaways to occupy the famous cottage was Mary Baker. When the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust purchased the cottage in 1892 from the then landlord, Mary and her family were subsequently paid a wage of £75 per year to share family stories and to care for the cottage, These very same stories are still told at the cottage today and take visitors on a journey back in time to the rituals and beliefs of Hathaway, Shakespear and their ancestors.
